Frequently asked questions
I DON’T HAVE A 3D PRINTER, WHAT CAN I DO?
Don’t worry we understand not everyone owns a 3D Printer. You can always locate one near you and have your STLs printed there (check www.3Dhubs.com ), charges for the prints might apply) . You can also use that at work, your university or school. 3D Printing manufacturers offer increasingly accessible prices, so may want to check with your local retailer about the possibility of having your own!
Alternatively, if you represent a school or educational institution in the UK, you can borrow a 3D printer FREE of charge for a whole month to run any of your projects. This is scheme is run by the Create Education Project and you can find all details here
CAN I ACCESS ALL YOUR CONTENT ONLY IF I’M A MEMBER?
Laykanics is a paid membership site. Whereas we keep some of the projects free, access to most of them is available only to members. Currently we offer a month to month recurring or a full-year membership and you can sign-up very easily with a debit card through our payment processor Braintree. As a launching promotion, when you become a paid member, we post you a kit for free wherever the country is that you live in! (some restrictions may apply).
IS IT SAFE TO PAY DIRECTLY AT YOUR WEBSITE? DO YOU USE PAYPAL?
Yes it is. LAYKANICS’ payment processor is Braintree , which is a branch of PayPal. Unlike PayPal Standard, Braintree allows the check-out process to happen directly at site without the need for the user to leave the website (more convenient). In order to increase security and to remain compliant with PCI-DSS regulations, LAYKANICS employs Secure Socket Layer technology (SSL) not only at the checkout page, but throughout the website (URL preceded by https://). This means that all the information you exchange while interacting with the website is encrypted and cannot be accessed by third parties. We recognize that some customers feel more comfortable using PayPal, and so we’ll be looking to implement PayPal Standard in the future as an alternative option for payment. If you would like to find out more, please write-us an email or give us a call .
The kit is a set of 10 to 12 external components that you will need to finish your projects. Because we want to add excitement and functionality to your printed parts, we think you’ll make use of miniature electrical motors, solar panels, bolts, nuts, rubber seals, steel axles….etc. In addition to the explanation on each project, we also give you basic technical information about each kit component so that you can create your own devices too!
I LIVE OUTSIDE THE UK, CAN YOU STILL SHIP THE KIT TO MY COUNTRY?
Yes, we ship anywhere in the world. If your country is outside the EU however, you may have to pay a customs TAX for when the KIT arrives in your Country. This TAX can range from 0% to 20% of the value of your purchase, depending of your country laws. Check with your local authorities before you make any purchase.
SOME PROJECTS DON’T MAKE USE OF ALL THE COMPONENTS WITHIN THE KIT, WHAT DO I DO WITH THE REST?
That’s right: not all projects need of all the components within a kit, but all components within the kit are to be used at some point or another. As we increase our collection of projects you will see that we’ll be covering them all. You will notice too that in some instances, the same component will get used in more than one project and you will start to wonder about the question below:
SO I GET A FREE KIT WITH MY SUSBCRIPTION, BUT WHAT IF I WANT ANOTHER ONE?
We’re currently working to be able to sell you as many kits as you like once a member. In this version of the website we still don’t offer that yet. As the site expands, we’ll be also issuing different types of kits. The intention will be to offer specialized components corresponding to the particular area of Mechanics that the projects will belong to. These can be Robotics, Aerodynamics, Renewable Energy, etc…
WITHIN A PARTICULAR PROJECT, WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE IT WORK?
The quickest way of putting together a project is to go over the Drawings that correspond to it. In particular the Bill of Materials (BOM) where different cross sections of the device in question show how the parts attach to each other and also specify those kit components that are required. The “Operation” section within the Project content will show you how the device operates. Although this is all you’ll need to know, you will definitely want to know the mechanical principles behind the device and for that we include the section “LEARN” to read on at any time.
DO YOU RECOMMEND A PARTICULAR SLICING SOFTWARE FOR OPTIMUM RESULTS?
At LAYKANICS we use Simplify3D . After several attempts with different slicers, we have determined that Simplify3D yields the best results. You should employ the slicer which you are most comfortable with, but we want to share our experience and results with you.
Another option is CURA , which is free of charge and runs particularly well in Ultimaker 3D Printers.
HOW MANY PROJECTS CAN I ACCESS DURING THE TIME OF MY SUBSCRIPTION?
You get access to any previously published projects plus new ones coming every month. We try to publish at least two projects per month with fresh content and increasing level of technical wonder. The idea is to keep you interested and aware of the constantly evolving things you can do with your 3D Printer.
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO COMMIT TO A FULL YEAR MEMBERSHIP?
You can try our shorter term membership and renew if you’re happy with what you get. The understanding and making of any project at laykanics takes time and patience. We want you to feel that for an extended period of time, you can study, inspect and come back to any project without the hassle of going through a check-out process every time you click for a download.
